EF Pro Cycling driver Daniel Martinez received blessings from the accident that occurred on Stage 4 of the Criterium du Dauphine 2020. The Colombian racer managed to come out as champion of the 2020 Criterium du Dauphine, even though in the last stage (stage 5) he only finished second.
As a result of the accident that occurred on stage 4, Jumbo-Visma driver Primoz Roglic finally resigned from the Criterium du Dauphine. During Stage 4, Roglic had an accident. But he still proved his toughness.
The rider from Slovenia continued the race in torn clothes. Roglic finally managed to finish at number 10. That could make him maintain the first position of the General Classification.
So, before the last stage or stage 5, Jumbo-Visma announced Roglic’s resignation. “As a result of his accident yesterday, Primoz Roglic, GC leader and points classification will not follow the last stage today. The evolution of the injury will determine plans for future races. Get well soon, @rogla, “wrote Jumbo-Visma’s official statement via his Twitter account.
This opportunity was not wasted by Daniel Martinez. This Colombian racer is actually his last position in GC (up to stage 4), still in fifth place. Under Roglic, Thibaut Pinot, Guillaume Martin, and Mikel Landa. Only Pinot had the chance to provide tough resistance to Martinez. But Martinez managed to finish faster than Pinot.
Martinez finished second, 27 seconds behind the winner of Stage 5, Sepp Kuss of the US (Jumbo-Visma). A finish in second position was enough to secure the yellow jersey. At the last stage of the Criterium du Dauphine, the drivers had to complete a route as far as 153.5 km.
Martinez said that when he knew Roglic was leaving, he and his team immediately got ready. “I immediately hoped to win the last stage in order to become champions,” he said. He claims to have found a gap on the last ascent to defeat Pinot.
Actually, at that time Martinez felt he was at his limit. But he was determined to the end. “I want to win the most important race in the world. Moreover, some Colombian riders have won this race. I want to be listed in it,” said Martinez.
Martinez is the third Colombian to win the Criterium du Dauphine. Previously there were the names Martin Ramirez (1984) and Luis Herrera (1988 and 1991). (Main bicycle)
