Alaphilippe live debut on next season’s Tour of Flanders

Recipient of the 2019 Velo d’or award, Julian Alaphilippe made a surprise. In the 2020 racing season the   Deceuninck – QuickStep rider was confirmed to appear at the monuments  race  in Belgium, the Tour of Flanders. 

The top French racer has just passed an extraordinary season in 2019. He won the Strade Bianche, Milano-Sanremo and La Flèche Wallonne. He topped the mountains classification at Critérium du Dauphiné 2019.

The climax, Alaphilippe five podiums on the 2019 Tour de France. Two of them were stage winners. Alaphilippe successfully wore a  yellow jersey  for 14 days. He ranks fifth in  general classification .

In an interview with the French newspaper L’Equipe, the spearhead of Deceuninck – QuickStep claimed it needed a new challenge next year. Therefore, he decided to take part in the Tour of Flanders, April 2020.

Tour of Flanders is one of five classic races in the world nicknamed ‘The Monuments’. This race takes place in Flanders, Belgium every early April. Eddy Merckx, until Peter Sagan won the event. 

Alaphilippe itself always stops in Belgium every April. In April 2019 yesterday he took part in three races in Belgium, namely La Flèche Wallone, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and De Brabantse Pijl – La Flèche Brabançonne.

It was Patrick Lefevere, the boss of Deceuninck-QuickStep who suggested Alaphilippe try a new experience by taking part in the Tour of Flanders. Alaphilippe has never been down on the Tour of Flanders in his career.

“Patrick said, we (Deceuninck-QuickStep) are fine if I compete in the Tour of Flanders. However, that should not be the main goal. Because if that doesn’t work, they still need me in Liege,” he said.

The plan, Alaphilippe will race on the Tour of Colombia, and Paris-Nice before he goes to Flanders.
