Tragedy struck the third stage of the Tour de Pologne (Poland), a WorldTour event, last Monday (August 5). The young star Lotto-Soudal, Bjorg Lambrecht, was declared dead after an accident when the stage only left about 50 km.
Details of how he fell were still blurred. This stage is classified as very flat , but heavy rain falls and makes the road slippery. Apparently, the 22-year-old racer from Belgium hit a concrete wall near the city of Zory.
The team of doctors tried to save him on the side of the road, then took him to the nearest hospital. However, he died while undergoing surgery. This bad news was received by the peloton of the race when it reached the finish line at Zabrze.
“We don’t know how he fell. What is clear is that it happened on a very flat road. We tried to restore his heart rate, then we called the helicopter. But the condition is so serious that it is impossible to transport it. We also continue to try to maintain his life. Then continue to do it in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. But he died during surgery in the hospital, “said Ryszard Wisniewski, race doctor Tour de Pologne.
The name Lambrecht is currently not too resonant. But he is classified as a potential future superstar. He was runner-up in the U23 world championship in 2018. And in his first year at WorldTour, he has achieved some special results. Including winning the white jersey as the best young racer at Criterium du Dauphine, last June.
In 2017, he also finished second on the Tour de l’Avenir, behind young Colombian star Egan Bernal. We all know now that Bernal was the 2019 Tour de France champion at the age of 22.
The Lotto-Soudal team is certainly devastated by this news. Moreover, they have just extended the Lambrecht contract for the next two years. “This is the worst tragedy that may occur to family, friends and teammates. “Rest in peace , Bjorg,” wrote Lotto-Soudal through social media.
Tour de Pologne itself continues. However, all ceremonies at the end of Stage 3 were canceled. Then, Stage 4 this Tuesday (August 6) was shortened to 133.7 km, and the racer’s timetable for general classification(GC) was neutralized. (riding bicycle)
