As a former Red Bull racer , Ricciardo also commented on the ‘racer exchange’ that took place in the middle of this season.
The French racer, Pierre Gasly , was announced to be ‘caste down’ for the remainder of the 2019 season and to race with the Toro Rosso team.
Meanwhile, Gasly’s position will be replaced by Toro Rosso’s Alexander Albon in the next 9 series.
To Crash.net, Ricciardo said he was surprised by Gasly’s appearance at Red Bull this season, which could not compensate for his partner, Max Verstappen.
Quoted Bolasport.com, the Australian driver did not expect the distance of Verstappen’s points with Gasly to be so far this season.
“It’s hard for Gasly because he is very far behind Max (Verstappen),” Ricciardo said.
“On the one hand, they (Red Bull) are happy with Max and the pole position he won at the 2019 Hungarian GP Grand Prix. However, on the other hand I think they expect to score more points this season,” Ricciardo added.
“I do not know what has happened to Pierre (Gasly) this season, because last season he achieved good results with Toro Rosso, which incidentally is not as good as Red Bull,” he said.
Judging from the acquisition of points this season, there is indeed an imbalance between Verstappen and Gasly.
Until the break of the season, Verstappen has earned 181 points and is comfortable in position 3 of the standings. While Gasly just won 63 points from 12 series this season.
Verstappen was even able to win two wins this season and become the rider who scored the most points in the last four races .
“I have been in a team with Max and I don’t think Pierre will be able to beat him,” Ricciardo admitted.
“So, I’m not surprised if Max beat Pierre this season. However, what I didn’t expect was how wide the distance between the two of them,” he continued.
Previously, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner had already hinted that he would not replace Gasly in the middle of the season. However, last week Red Bull was forced to swallow his own saliva.
The reason for this exchange according to Red Bull is as an opportunity to evaluate the performance of the three drivers, namely Gasly, Albon, and Daniil Kvyat.
The results of this evaluation will then be used to determine the composition of racers who will race on the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams in the upcoming 2020 season.
Meanwhile, Verstappen, who has signed a contract extension, will certainly continue to race on the Red Bull team until the end of the 2020 season.
