Lakers Successfully Take Advantage of Heat Weakness in Game 2

The Los Angeles Lakers won 124-114 in Game 2 of the 2020 NBA Finals, Friday, October 2 local time. The Lakers managed to take advantage of the Heat’s weakness in the absence of injured Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo. Now they are leading 2-0 and getting closer to the title this season.

LeBron James scored 33 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists, no turnover. James broke the record set by Magic Johson in 1987. Johnson scored 29 points and 13 assists, without a turnover. Anthony Davis freely scored 32 points and 14 rebounds in this game. Davis has packed 30 points in the third quarter.

Apart from these two stars, the Lakers got 16 points and 10 assists from Rajon Rondo. Followed by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma who both contributed 11 points. The Lakers outperformed the Heat on points in the paint (56-46), rebounds (44-37) and assists (32-29). The Lakers also scored 16 tripoin from 47 attempts.

On the Heat side, Erik Spoelstra played a different starter. Meyers Leonard and Tyler Herro filled the positions left by Dragic and Adebayo. Unfortunately, Leonard was unable to answer the coach’s trust. Jimmy Butler led the Heat with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Kelly Olynyk followed behind with 24 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Herro contributed 17 points, followed by Kendrick Nunn (13 points), and Jae Crowder (12 points).

The Lakers made more than five turnovers and only scored 3 tripoin in 12 attempts. But they led 29-23 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lakers shot improved accuracy. They scored 27 tripoin attempts, which became the record for the most attempts in a single round for the NBA Finals. The Lakers led 68-54 at halftime.

Miami, without injured stars Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo, tried to avoid defeat. But their struggle is getting tougher. Davis led the Lakers with 15 points in the first half, while LeBron James had 12 points and six assists. Meanwhile, Butler contributed 11 points and eight assists for the Heat at the break.

The third quarter set the stage for Davis. He scored 15 points in this quarter, bringing his total points to 30 points. The total was scored in just 26 minutes on the pitch. The Lakers led 92-79 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter. They were able to maintain the advantage 103-93 when the third quarter ended. In this quarter, Kelly Olynyk scored 16 points from the bench, and helped the Heat slow down LeBron James. Olynyk actually performed better than Meyers Leonard who was installed to replace Bam Adebayo in this second game. Leonard was only deployed for nine minutes.

In the fourth quarter, the Heat lowered the tempo of the game. They managed to cut the deficit to 10 points with seven minutes remaining. Until five minutes of the fourth quarter, the two teams could only score a dozen points. With five minutes remaining, Kendrick Nunn’s shot was blocked by Anthony Davis. It encouraged his comrades to get up. But until the buzzer went off, they were never able to get close to the Lakers.

The victory made the Lakers lead 2-0 in the 2020 NBA Finals series. The third game will take place on Sunday, October 4 local time.
